The Katanes hydrogen project will provide Iceland with a clean source of energy for mobility in the form of green hydrogen and green ammonia for the maritime sector.

The Katanes hydrogen project will provide Iceland with a clean source of energy in the form of green hydrogen and ammonia

Fully build the plant will produce 120 thousand tons of green hydrogen or 700 thousand tons of green ammonia. This will replace greenhouse gases in a meaningful way.

Hydrogen and ammonia not used for the energy transition in Iceland will be exported to Europe, giving the country a new source of foreign income. By doing this we are able to utilize the cost advantages that enterprises obtain due to their scale of operations, to secure competitive prices of hydrogen and ammonia to the consumer.

The project site at Grundartangi is 36 hectares and has already been secured in a contract along with water for the electrolysis, necessary roads, connection to utilities in the area and a new harbor facility specialized for shipping of gaseous substances and liquids.

The Katanes hydrogen project will provide the country with an opportunity for a clean source of energy for the ongoing energy transition. We will do this by harnessing the wind, the deep geothermal energy of the earth and the hydrological power of glacial rivers, transported to the project site by the all green electricity grid of Iceland.

Front-end engineering designs and studies for final investment decision are ongoing and selection of contractors and construction are being prepared. Planned operating date for the first phase of the project is early next decade.
